Villanova University students undertaking an academic placement at the University of Cádiz through the University School of Modern Languages (CSLM) took part on 3 June in a paella cooking workshop, one of the cultural activities organised to complement their studies during their stay in the city of Cádiz.
The experience took place at Petit Comité, a gastronomic venue specialising in workshops, tastings and culinary experiences that aims to bring cooking to the public in a participatory and accessible way. The venue is run by Cádiz-born chef and entrepreneur Lorena Contreras, who guided the students through the preparation of this iconic dish of Spanish cuisine, whilst also sharing interesting facts, techniques and traditions linked to the country’s culinary culture.
During the workshop, participants not only learnt how to prepare an authentic paella, but also gained a deeper understanding of the social value of gastronomy in Spain as a means of bringing people together, fostering a sense of community and passing on cultural traditions.
Hailing from Villanova University, a prestigious American institution founded in 1842 and renowned for its international focus, the students are taking part in exchange programmes that promote intercultural learning and language immersion. The relationship between Villanova and the University of Cádiz is, moreover, one of the UCA’s most established international partnerships. This year marks the 37th anniversary of this programme, through which hundreds of American students have passed over the last few decades.
The cultural programme will continue over the coming weeks with new activities designed to enrich their international experience. Highlights include a flamenco workshop, which will introduce them to one of Andalusia’s most iconic art forms, as well as various excursions and cultural visits aimed at exploring the province’s historical, artistic and natural heritage.
In this way, students from Villanova University continue to gain experiences that make their time in Cádiz a unique opportunity to combine academic study, language learning and cultural discovery.
