The programme, organised by the University School of Modern Languages, strengthens an academic partnership between the two institutions that began in 2011

The Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation at the University of Cádiz has welcomed 12 students from UMass Lowell (University of Massachusetts Lowell), who will be undertaking an academic placement at the UCA as part of the international programmes organised by the University School of Modern Languages (CSLM).

The welcome ceremony took place this week in the Salón de Grados at the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences and was attended by the Director-General for Language Policy and of the CSLM, Leonor Acosta, accompanied by the CSLM coordinator, María Fernández, and the head of the UMass Lowell programme, María R. Matz.

The programme forms part of the range of international programmes organised each summer by the University of Cádiz to promote language learning, cultural exchange and academic mobility amongst international students. During their time at the university, the American students will combine learning Spanish with gaining an understanding of the culture, history and social reality of the province of Cádiz through an academic and cultural immersion programme.

The partnership between the University of Cádiz and UMass Lowell dates back to 2011, when both institutions signed a framework agreement for collaboration. Since then, the two universities have maintained an ongoing academic relationship, which was strengthened in 2023 with the renewal and extension of the agreement, incorporating new areas of cooperation aimed at promoting student exchanges and the development of joint initiatives in the field of internationalisation.

This programme is a further example of the close relationship that the University of Cádiz maintains with higher education institutions in the United States, one of the main areas of international collaboration for the CSLM.

The CSLM’s international programmes combine academic training with activities that foster social interaction and intercultural exchange, offering a holistic experience that goes beyond language learning. This approach enables participants to develop intercultural skills, gain an insight into the Spanish university system and share experiences with students and staff at the University of Cádiz.
